Roll Review 2024
Roll by ADP is a chat-based payroll solution that allows small businesses with little to no experience to run payroll and maintain compliance from anywhere and anytime. It is run with an AI-based conversational interface that can be accessed via smartphone, tablet, desktop, or laptop. Roll offers a unique experience for very small businesses but its not suitable for medium or large-size companies.
Roll enables businesses to run payroll for full-time, contractual, part-time, and seasonal workers. Apart from helping businesses manage payroll in all 50 U.S. states, Roll offers tax calculation and filing, wages and garnishments, insights and advice, and employee self-service features.
- Quick 15-minute setup for small businesses
- 3-month free trial
- Automated tax filings
- 24/7 customer support
- No benefits administration
- No integration with HoneyBook
- Very limited scalability
Roll by ADP review: Ease of use
The unique selling proposition of Roll by ADP is that it is designed for small businesses without any experience in running payroll. This shows in their quick implementation process, which takes fewer than 15 minutes. You only have to install the app from Google Play or the App Store and onboard yourself.
From hiring employees to entering their information, everything is done via chat. The process isn’t complicated—whenever you want to run payroll, simply open the chat and type “ Run my payroll.” It takes just one minute.
Being text-based, the app can easily adapt to your company’s needs. It quickly adjusts to your routines and misspellings as well.
However, there are two drawbacks to Roll by ADP. The first is that you need to input all data manually, which can be time-consuming. The second is that the text-based interface and functionality might be limited for mid-size and large businesses.
Roll by ADP review: Pricing
Roll offers a single plan that includes all of its payroll features. It is available for a base fee of $29 per month and an additional $5 fee for each employee.
The best thing about this plan is that you are charged the employee fee only when you pay your employees. There’s no charge if you don’t pay an employee in a given month. You don’t need to deactivate the employee for this, either.
Here are all the features that are offered by Roll to all its users:
- Unlimited payroll runs in all 50 U.S. states
- Payroll for W-2 and 1099 workers
- Tax calculation, deductions, and filing
- Same-day and next-day direct deposit
- Payments with direct deposit or company check
- Garnishments
- New hire reporting
- Reminders for tasks and deadlines
- QuickBooks Online integration
- GenAI chat functionality
- Tipped wage support (cash and charged tips)
Roll also automatically sends all your employees an invite to download the same app. Its employee self-service features include:
- At-a-glance information about the position, pay, and benefits
- Paystub information and downloads
- Tax statement downloads
- Payday notifications
- Reminders for tasks and deadlines
Roll by ADP review: Features
Roll’s features are quite limited compared to what competitors offer and will probably not cover the requirements of medium and large size businesses. Here’s a look at what’s included in Roll’s payroll plan:
Payroll
Roll by ADP takes care of payroll and only requires a simple text-based prompt to initiate. It runs unlimited payrolls across all 50 states.
You can choose between direct deposit and company checks. Direct deposits can be made same-day or next-day. Next-day deposits are available exactly 24 hours after payroll submission. However, same-day deposits require a nominal per-transaction fee.
If you don’t want to follow a strict payroll cycle, Roll also has an off-cycle payment feature that allows you to pay employees whenever you want.
What’s more, as you run payroll, the GenAI technology will continuously adapt to your input, preferred payroll cycle, payment frequency, and other actions. It gets to know your business’s payroll schedule and will quickly be able to predict and fill out all the information for you in the future.
Taxes
Even if your employees live and work in different states, Roll can manage their taxes for you. Plus, the platform calculates, deducts, and files your taxes for each pay period. This includes all federal, state, and local taxes. It also handles filing and remitting payments for W2s and 1099 NECs.
In addition, employees and contractors can easily access their previous year’s tax statements on the app. The statements are available for viewing and download in January of the following year. Employees don’t need to do anything, as Roll sends notifications for the same.
Wages and garnishments
With Roll, you can give your employees raises and bonuses anytime. You can add the amounts to the payroll run or disburse them separately.
You can also add cash tips and charged tips to your payroll by simply entering “New compensation type” in the text box and following the instructions of the chat assistant.
As for wage garnishments, all you need to do is add or update them, and Roll will do all the work. The system tracks all garnishments over time and stays on top of the latest regulations to ensure your business always remains compliant.
Those in the food service, transport, construction, and similar industries often have different payroll needs than other businesses. Roll also supports the different payroll cycles and requirements of those sectors.
Employee self-service
Roll also offers an employee version of the app to give them more autonomy over their payroll. They can log in and easily view their paystubs and tax information, update their personal profile and banking details, and track all related processes.
The app also helps them stay on top of certain tasks through notifications. This includes notifications for payday, tax statements, task deadlines, etc.
1099 contractor
If you only want to pay contractors, Roll helps you with that, too. It offers hourly and flat-rate payment options and supports off-cycle payments as well.
Intelligent assistance
From accessing company data to gaining valuable payroll and HR guidance, Roll leverages cutting-edge GenAI analysis to provide clients with intelligent assistance and insight.
The best part is that you don’t have to look at any complicated reports. You can simply ask your question in the chat box and get all the updates you want. Here are the types of questions you can ask GenAI:
- When was [employee name] hired?
- List my employees by tenure
- How much salary am I paying my employees?
- Help me prepare a job description for hiring a truck driver
- Can you help me with tips on conducting a hiring interview?
- What is a 401k deduction?
- Is my business/organization eligible for tax credits?
- How will my taxation be affected when I add more employees?
- Can you help me with social media marketing strategies for my business?
Integrations
At present, Roll only offers 1 integration solution, and that is QuickBooks Online. This takes care of your business accounting needs.
Although Generative AI (GenAI) is also an integration, it’s mainly responsible for the AI-based chat interface and intelligent assistance.
Payroll reports
Whether you want to access your payroll reports or have your accountant or bookkeeper have a look at them, Roll takes care of it for you. You can simply instruct the chat, and Roll will send the reports over.
Salary paycheck calculator
An additional feature from Roll, the salary paycheck calculator, is an online tool available for free. You can get quick estimates of wages after deductions, payroll, benefits, and more for all 50 U.S. states.
Roll by ADP review: Customer support
Users can access Roll’s customer support team via email, phone, and live chat. The live chat function is available 24/7, whereas phone support is available Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm EST. Roll also has a blog and detailed FAQ page with more information on its features and services.
Is Roll by ADP legit?
Founded in 2021, Roll by ADP is a relatively new company. However, it is backed by the industry-leading payroll and HR service provider, ADP. ADP is a BBB-accredited business founded in 1949, so users are assured of its expertise and experience in the industry.
Roll by ADP review: Verdict
Roll’s chat-based app is a unique payroll solution that leverages cutting-edge AI technology. At first glance, it seems perfect for small businesses. It is a fantastic option for a payroll service provider if you run your operations with a lean team or just by yourself.
The platform’s chat interface is easy to use, even for those without any previous experience in running or setting up payroll. You will not be overwhelmed by complicated dashboards with endless information. Furthermore, employees can access payroll and tax data via a mobile app.
While we like that the service is affordable, the features are very limited. There are no other integrations besides QuickBooks Online. If you need to manage benefits, track time and PTO, or need more integrations, it is best to check out other payroll solutions.
